It may surprise you to learn that Spain has the most land planted under vine in the world. It is also the country that grows the world's most planted grape variety, Airen – albeit only planted in that country. What should not surprise you, however, is the quality and diversity of wines that Spain has to offer. Aside from Sherry and Cava, Spain's dry wines enjoy a strong reputation for their consistently high quality. Tempranillo, the national grape, produces sterling wines from across the country. In particular, La Rioja Alta in the Rioja region, offers various excellent wines, very much in a traditional mould. What is remarkable about Spain is that, in addition to the fine selection of native grapes, its terrain and climate is conducive to successfully growing numerous international varieties.
